GDUSA DIGITAL PRINTING COVER CONTEST ILLUSTRATION
submission
Design a digitally printed tip-on outsert that will double as the September/October 2014 magazine cover of Graphic Design USA. You may enter original or previously unpublished artwork. The judges will choose up to 3 winners and 3 honorable mentions based on; the overall visual appearance and effective communication and the integration of the design with a Neenah digital paper of your choice.
After some initial thumb nails I settled on a fashion/beauty inspired design paired with a pearlized white paper by Neenah.

Rough composition based on photo collage and handdrawn elements.

Tightened composition redrawn in Illustrator.

Wire frame of final illustration.

Finished illustration. I decided to remove the word bubble. Even though the play on words was part of the inspriration for the design I felt it was too provocative and cluttered an otherwise graphicly bold image.

Finished cover mock-up as submitted to the contest. Using opaque color builds heavy in black has the effect of masking the paper increasing the drama in the lighter areas of the design where pearlized reflectivity will shine through.
